Historical source (also known as historical material) is the original source that contain important historical information. These sources are something that inform us about history at the most basic level and these sources used as clues in order to study.
Historical sources are classified into primary and secondary sources.
Primary sources are the first- hand accounts of an event compiled by people who had witnessed the event. Monuments, coins, inscriptions, paintings, sculptures and artefacts are examples of primary sources. These are common to all three periods of history (ancient, medieval and modern periods). Sources of Modern history also includes government reports, newspapers, letters, diaries, interviews, autobiographies, photographs, films and maps.
Secondary sources are those which are based on the study of primary sources. They are created by scholars who study a variety of primary sources and analyse them. Secondary sources mainly includes scholarly books and journals.
